In the business world, the skill of touch type saves time, money, energy and poor health. These jobs include an increase in home based businesses. However, for a growing number of jobs that require the regular use of word processing software, touch typing is a necessary skill. These people are not sitting in front of a computer all day. Some jobs have minimal use of the keyboard such as the farmer out on the land or the butcher or mail delivery person. This is important for school assignments, connecting casually with friends and family, things like blogging and, productivity in the workplace. Computers have become an essential part of the way we communicate. Many homes have more than one computer and just about every workplace in the western world relies on one. The increase of technology in homes and the workplace demands it.
Touch typing when properly learned ensures that correct body and hand position protect the user from things like RSI and other muscular/skeletal aches and pains.ģ. On average a touch typist can type twice as fast as a hunt and peck typist. The old ‘hunt and peck’ method might get the job done but it has long been proven that children and adults will become better, faster, healthier typists if they learn to touch type. The touch typing method is without question a faster, more accurate and ergonomically healthier way to type. But without correct instruction they will quickly pick up bad habits with bad results. Many children will learn to type on their own because they have a computer at home. Nothing matches Touch Typing for speed, accuracy and health. Besides, children this young don’t need more screen time, a factor that is contributing to attention issues and obesity. Because there are no great requirements in life for very young children to HAVE to have keyboard skills and because basic keyboard skills can be learned over 1-2 years, many believe that this skill is best left till the child is at least 9-10 years old. Small fingers (and some are very small) should not be forced to have to stretch to reach keys on a keyboard. The argument here is that children of this age are still developing some of their basic motor skills and they need to develop these first before attempting anything like touch typing. Learning is easier when you’re younger – but how young? Many believe that teaching touch typing skills to pre-schoolers is a bit over the top.
